Ideologies and ideas - Communism
Communism is a
political and economic ideology. It positions itself in opposition to liberal
democracy and capitalism. whose aim is to create a society devoid of class
oppression and exploitation, based on the lack of private property but
collective ownership of the means of production and collective distribution of
goods. Communism is thus a form of socialism—a higher and more advanced form,
according to its advocates. This ideology was developed by Karl Marx and Friedrich
Engels. In the nineteenth century, two variants of this ideology arose. One
variant was the abolition of state institutions and collectivism, and one was
Marxist, which was based on the 1848 Communist Manifest. According to the
Marxist variant of communism, the achievement of a classless society was to
come through revolution.
Colloquially, communism
is also defined as the political system introduced in countries where power was
gained by dictatorships and communist parties for example USSR. Regimes
invoking the ideology of communism caused the deaths of 65 to around 100
million people.

Some of the social ideas from before and around Marx's time were really admirable, e.g. Robert Owen's utopian community or some French thinkers before him (though you can argue that they were socialists rather than communists).
